![]() ![]() Adams first visited Yosemite National Park in 1916 and was immediately taken with the scenery. ![]() At the age of 12, Adams’ father removed him from school entirely, and he was subsequently educated by his father, aunt, and private tutors. Adams was dismissed from several private schools for being inattentive. By 1912, the family’s standard of living had decreased significantly. Adams’ nose was broken, never reset, and caused him lifelong breathing issues.Īdams’ father suffered significant financial losses after part of the lumber business was sold from under him. ![]() He was uninjured in the initial quake but jolted into a wall during an aftershock. The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake was one of Adams’s earliest memories. Later, as an environmental advocate, Adams condemned the industry his grandfather built his life on, for cutting down many of the vast redwood forests. His paternal grandfather founded and built a prosperous lumber business and employed Ansel’s father. Ansel Easton Adams was born on February 20, 1902, in San Francisco, California. ![]()
